Simonetta Sommaruga

The mandate of Simonetta Sommaruga as a member of the Swiss Federal Council spanned twelve years, concluding with her resignation in November 2022. Born in 1960 in Zug, she balanced a background in music with a sustained career in public administration and governance, eventually representing the canton of Bern at the highest levels of the Swiss political system.

Early Training and Consumer Advocacy

Before entering national politics, Sommaruga studied as a pianist at the Lucerne School of Music. She later enrolled at the University of Fribourg to study English and Romance languages. Her transition into public life began through advocacy, specifically serving as director of the Consumer Protection Foundation from 1993 to 1999, and later as its president until 2010. During this period, she also led the aid organisation Swissaid.

Legislative Career

Sommaruga built her political standing through progressive roles in regional and national assemblies. She held a seat in the Grand Council of Bern from 1981 to 1990 and served in the municipal government of Köniz between 1997 and 2005. Her federal career commenced in 1999 with her election to the Swiss National Council, followed by a transition to the Council of States in 2003.

Federal Council and Executive Leadership

In 2010, the Federal Assembly elected Sommaruga to the Swiss Federal Council to succeed Moritz Leuenberger. Over the next decade, she headed the Federal Department of Justice and Police, followed by the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. She occupied the presidency of the Swiss Confederation twice, first in 2015 and again in 2020. Her 2020 term was defined by the domestic response to the COVID-19 pandemic and her appearance at the Lausanne Winter Youth Olympics.
