Simion Filip secured a silver medal at the 2005 International Mathematical Olympiad while representing Moldova, marking the start of an academic trajectory that led him to study complex dynamical systems. Currently a professor, he maintains an active research focus on the intersections of algebraic geometry and the dynamics of Teichmüller spaces, contributing to developments in modern geometric theory.
Academic Foundation
Before pursuing graduate studies, Filip attended the Orizont Lyceum in Chișinău, graduating in 2005. He earned an A.B. in mathematics from Princeton University in 2009. This was followed by a year at the University of Cambridge, where he completed Part III of the Mathematical Tripos and received a master's degree with distinction in 2010. He completed his Ph.D. in 2016 at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Alex Eskin.

Filip held several research positions following his doctoral work. He served as a Junior Fellow at Harvard University from 2016 to 2018. During this same general period, he held a five-year Clay Research Fellowship, which ran from 2016 to 2021. Additionally, he spent one year at the Institute for Advanced Study between 2018 and 2019. These roles preceded his return to the University of Chicago.
Current Appointments and Recognition
In 2019, Filip joined the faculty at the University of Chicago as an associate professor. He attained the rank of full professor in 2023. His scholarly output has been recognized by the mathematical community, most notably through his selection as a recipient of the EMS Prize in 2020. His work continues to explore the integration of Hodge theory within the broader field of complex geometry.
