Upon the establishment of Forza Italia, Di Cagno Abbrescia became an early member. His electoral success led to two terms as the mayor of Bari, starting in 1995 and continuing through his reconfirmation in 1999. In 2006, he expanded his political influence to the national level, winning election to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic. He retained this position following the 2008 elections while representing The People of Freedom. He later attempted a return to local government in 2009, standing as the centre-right coalition candidate for Bari, though he was defeated by Michele Emiliano.
Infrastructure Leadership and Final Years
Beyond his elected offices, Di Cagno Abbrescia continued his involvement in regional administration. On 20 March 2018, the Apulian Regional Council selected him to serve as president of the Apulian Aqueduct board. He held various distinctions during his life, including being named a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He died in Bari on 29 March 2024, just before his eightieth birthday.
