Early Career and Sporting CP
Emerging from the youth system at Sporting CP, Varela spent his formative professional years on loan to Casa Pia A.C. and Vitória F.C. Although he performed consistently with the Portugal under-21 squad, he struggled to secure a permanent role within the Sporting first team, managing only two substitute appearances during the 2005–06 season. He eventually spent time with C.F. Estrela da Amadora before his career trajectory shifted significantly with a move to Porto.

In March 2009, Varela secured a five-year deal with FC Porto, making his debut that August. His first year saw him finish as the squad’s second-highest goalscorer behind Radamel Falcao. During the 2010–11 campaign, he reached a career-best 13 goals across 44 games, contributing to a season that yielded the league title, the cup, and the UEFA Europa League. Despite suffering a broken fibula in 2010, he remained a core member of the team, eventually becoming their longest-serving player before departing in 2017.
International Contributions
Varela earned his first full cap for the Portugal national team on 3 March 2010 in a friendly against China. He proved to be an effective substitute at major tournaments, most notably scoring an 88th-minute winner against Denmark during UEFA Euro 2012. Two years later, at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he secured a late 2–2 draw for Portugal against the United States with a header in the 94th minute.
Later Years and Retirement
After his departure from Porto, Varela played for Kayserispor in Turkey and later joined B-SAD, where he served as captain. In 2021, he returned to FC Porto to assist in the development of reserve players in Liga Portugal 2. He scored on his debut for the reserves and concluded his professional playing career following a one-year contract extension in 2022.
