Sifan Hassan

Sifan Hassan secured a unique place in Olympic history at the Paris 2024 Games by winning the women's marathon, complementing her bronze medals in both the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres. This achievement established her as the only athlete to win Olympic gold medals in these three distinct distances, highlighting her extreme versatility across middle and long-distance running events.

Early Background and Migration

Born in 1993 in Adama, Ethiopia, Hassan was raised in the countryside of Kersa, located in the Munesa district of the Arsi Zone. She moved to the Netherlands in 2008 at age 15 as a refugee. While pursuing studies to become a nurse, she began training as an athlete. She obtained Dutch citizenship in 2013 and eventually joined the Papendal national training centre for top athletes.

Professional Breakthrough and European Success

Hassan entered the 2011 Eindhoven half marathon, clocking 77:10 minutes. Her career accelerated in 2013 with notable performances, including an 800 metres personal best of 2:00.86. Following her naturalisation, she won the 2013 European Cross Country Championships in the under-23 category. By 2014, she secured gold in the 1500 m and silver in the 5000 m at the European Championships.

Global Championship Dominance

At the 2019 World Athletics Championships, Hassan achieved a historic double by winning both the 1500 m and 10,000 m titles. During the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she completed an unprecedented triple, earning gold in the 5,000 m and 10,000 m, and bronze in the 1,500 m. She was appointed a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2021.

Records and Marathon Transition

Hassan has held multiple world records, including the one hour run since 2020, and briefly held the 10,000 m world record in 2021. Between 2019 and 2023, she held the one mile track world record. She also maintains six European records across distances from 1500 m to the marathon. Her transition to the classic 26.2-mile distance proved successful when she won the 2023 London Marathon.
