Siegfried Helferich Richard Wagner took charge of the Bayreuth Festival in 1908, managing the institution for twenty-two years until his death. Early Development and Shift to Music
Initial musical training included harmony lessons from his grandfather, Franz Liszt. By 1889, he finished his secondary education and pursued architectural studies in Berlin and Karlsruhe. A 1892 voyage to Asia with composer Clement Harris prompted a career change, leading him to commit fully to music. He began sketching his first official work, the symphonic poem Sehnsucht, during the trip, eventually conducting its premiere in London in 1895.

Wagner gained his first professional experience as an assistant conductor at Bayreuth in 1894. He moved to the position of associate conductor by 1896, where he shared responsibilities for the Ring cycle alongside Felix Mottl and Hans Richter. In 1908, he succeeded his mother, Cosima, as the artistic director of the Bayreuth Festival, a role he maintained until his death in 1930.
Personal Life and Succession
His personal life was marked by his bisexuality and pressures to maintain the Wagner family dynasty. Following the Harden–Eulenburg affair, he married 17-year-old Winifred Klindworth in 1915, with whom he had four children: Wieland, Friedelind, Wolfgang, and Verena. Despite the marriage, his private life continued to involve sexual encounters with other men. He died in Bayreuth at age 61, leaving the festival directorship to his widow.
Compositional Output
His catalogue includes numerous vocal and orchestral works. Orchestral compositions range from the 1913 Concertino for flute and small orchestra to his 1925 Symphony in C major. He also wrote various vocal pieces, including Abend auf dem Meere and Weihnacht. While his works are numerous, none of his compositions secured a permanent place in the standard international repertory.
