Early Career and Judicial Ascent
Born in 1930 in Pemai village, Ahmed pursued studies at the University of Dhaka, earning degrees in economics and international relations before attending the University of Oxford for public administration. He entered the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1954. After roles as a sub-divisional officer and deputy commissioner, he transitioned to the judicial branch in 1960. By 1972, he served as a High Court judge, later joining the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1980. His administrative work included chairing the National Pay Commission in 1984.

In January 1990, Ahmed became the chief justice of Bangladesh. Following widespread protests that led to the resignation of Hussain Muhammad Ershad in December 1990, political factions selected Ahmed to lead an interim government. He oversaw a national election in February 1991 and transferred authority to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He returned to his position as chief justice shortly thereafter, serving until his retirement in February 1995.
Presidential Tenure
Nominated by the Awami League, Ahmed assumed the presidency on 9 October 1996 after winning an unopposed election. His term concluded in November 2001. During this period, he encountered political friction with the Awami League leadership following the 2001 general elections. His public service extended to the humanitarian sector, where he led the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society from 1978 to 1982, focusing on maternity care and rural health infrastructure.
Death and Legacy
Ahmed died on 19 March 2022 at the age of 92 while receiving care at the Combined Military Hospital for age-related conditions. His career is marked by his movement between the highest levels of the judiciary and the executive branch. In 2008, a park in Gulshan, Dhaka, was named in his honour to recognize his contributions to the nation.
