Early Career in Dhaka
Born in 1946 in Dhaka, Basak began her formal artistic training at the Bulbul Lalitakala Academy. Her early exposure to the film industry arrived through dance sequences in movies such as Ei Desh Tomar Amar and Rajdhanir Bukey. Public demand following these roles led to her promotion to lead actress, starting with her debut in the Bengali film Harano Din.
Transition to Lollywood
In 1962, the director Ehtesham cast her in the Urdu production Chanda, marking her entry into the West Pakistani film industry. Because she lacked proficiency in Urdu at the time, she practiced using scripts written in Bengali. The film was a success, establishing her as a major figure in the industry. In 1968, she moved to West Pakistan, where she continued to work until the late 1990s.

Shabnam acted in a total of 170 films, consisting of 152 Urdu, 14 Bengali, and 4 Punjabi productions. Her work sustained high popularity until the mid-1980s, when she shifted toward character-driven roles. Her final major performance in a central role was in the 1999 hit Ammajan, directed by Kazi Hayat. Her record of industry awards remains a highlight of her professional legacy.
The 1978 Assault Case
On 13 May 1978, the residence of Shabnam and her husband, Robin Ghosh, in the Gulberg area of Lahore was the site of an armed dacoity involving Farooq Bandial and four other men. A Special Military Court initially sentenced the perpetrators to death. Following an intervention by the couple, who granted the men a pardon, the sentences were commuted to life imprisonment by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.
Retirement and Return
Shabnam retired to Bangladesh in 1997 to focus on the care of her aging parents. She later returned to Pakistan in 2012 for a lifetime achievement award ceremony hosted by PTV. In 2017, she signaled a return to the screen, participating in the television series Mohini Mansion Ki Cinderellayain and committing to star in Aina 2, a sequel to her earlier work.
