Early Development and Education
Seun Kuti displayed an interest in music by age five. By age nine, he was actively playing with Egypt 80. His formal musical training took him to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. While studying in England, he joined the African Funk ensemble known as River Niger, further refining his skills as a saxophonist and vocalist.

In 2008, Kuti released Many Things, the debut album under the moniker Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. His discography continued with From Africa With Fury: Rise in 2011 and A Long Way to the Beginning in 2014. His 2018 project, Black Times, earned a Grammy Award nomination in the World Music category. In 2024, he released his sixth studio album, Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head). Beyond his own recordings, Kuti has appeared on tracks by various artists, including Calle 13, Jidenna, Sinéad O'Connor, and Janelle Monáe.
Activism and Industry Stance
Kuti is noted for his political involvement, including participation in the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protests against fuel subsidy removal. In 2020, he attempted to revive his father's defunct political party, the Movement of the People. He has stated that his politically-charged musical style resulted in his exclusion from Nigeria’s mainstream industry for more than 13 years, a claim he discussed during a 2026 appearance on the Saleh Meditate podcast.
