Athletic Career
Before her tenure in politics, Essayah established herself as a elite racewalker, primarily competing in 5 and 10-kilometre events. Her international achievements include victory at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics and the 1994 European Athletics Championships. She also secured success at the 1991 Summer Universiade. Throughout her sports career, she participated in multiple international competitions, including the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.

Essayah holds an M.Sc in business administration and accounting from the University of Vaasa. Her political career began with her service in the Parliament of Finland between 2003 and 2007. Following a period as the Christian Democrats' party secretary, she served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2009 until 2014. She returned to the national legislature in 2015, representing the Savonia and Karelia constituency. In June 2023, she accepted the position of Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. Beyond her parliamentary roles, she has served as a municipal councillor and holds membership in the International Olympic Committee since 2016.
Party Leadership and Presidential Candidacy
In August 2015, Essayah was elected chairperson of the Finnish Christian Democrats, succeeding Päivi Räsänen. She has maintained this leadership role through subsequent party congresses. Her political activities have included presidential campaigns in 2012 and 2024. As a public figure, she is known for her adherence to Pentecostalism and her engagement in international advisory roles, such as her membership in the Advisory Council of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs.
