The 12th Prime Minister of Thailand rose to national leadership in 1973 following a period of intense democratic transition. Before reaching the premiership, he maintained a distinguished career as a jurist and academic, ultimately serving as the president of both the Supreme Court and the Privy Council under royal appointment.
Early Education and Legal Training
Born in Thon Buri on 5 April 1907, he attended the Taweethapisek School and later Assumption College, where he completed his studies in 1925. He pursued law at the Ministry of Justice, graduating in 1928 with the highest marks in his cohort. This achievement earned him the Rapheeboonnithi scholarship, which funded his relocation to London. He studied at the Middle Temple and attained status at the English Bar in 1932.

He held several significant government positions throughout his professional life. He functioned as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice between 1953 and 1958. His judicial service included a tenure as President of the Supreme Court of Thailand from 1963 to 1967. Beyond the courtroom, he served as a university teacher and the chancellor of Thammasat University, where he also held the title of professor.
Political Leadership
His entry into the Prime Minister's Office followed the departure of the previous administration during the democracy movement of October 1973. Appointed by royal command, he held the premiership for 1 year and 124 days, covering two consecutive terms. During this time, he oversaw the implementation of a new constitution in 1974 and served as vice-president of the constitutional congress. His executive work included acting as Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office from 1973 to 1975.
Awards and Legacy
Throughout his career, he was the recipient of numerous national and international decorations. Notable honours include the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit and the Grand Cross 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was also a follower of the Theravāda tradition. He died at Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok on 6 January 2002.
