Samuel Alexander Joseph West began his professional journey in 1989 at the Orange Tree Theatre, portraying Michael in Les Parents Terribles. Since that London debut, he has maintained a varied career spanning stage performance, screen acting, and theatre direction, grounded by his academic background in English literature at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
Early Career and Stage Performance
Before pursuing a full-time acting career, West studied at Alleyn's School and later Oxford. He gained early recognition for his stage work, notably playing Valentine in the 1993 National Theatre production of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia. He later undertook the demanding title roles of Richard II and Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His stage credits include performances in T.S. Eliot's Family Reunion and Lucy Prebble's Enron, the latter of which earned him a 2010 Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor.

West's film career includes a 1993 BAFTA-nominated supporting performance as Leonard Bast in Howards End. He has appeared in diverse projects ranging from Notting Hill and Iris to the darker tones of Darkest Hour. On television, he portrayed Anthony Blunt in the BBC series Cambridge Spies, a role he reprised in The Crown in 2019. More recently, he has gained prominence for his portrayal of Siegfried Farnon in the long-running series All Creatures Great and Small and as the ambitious politician Peter Judd in the spy drama Slow Horses.
Directorial Pursuits
Transitioning into direction, West made his stage directorial debut in 2002 with The Lady's Not for Burning at Chichester. From 2005 to 2007, he served as the artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, where he directed As You Like It and a revival of The Romans in Britain. His 2008 production of Waste at the Almeida Theatre received critical acclaim, being listed as one of The Times' productions of the decade.
