Rudolph Goclenius the Younger: The Professor Who Treated the Sword
The recipe called for moss scraped from the skull of an unburied corpse, two ounces of human fat, half an ounce of mummy, half an ounce of human blood, and oils. You did not put it on the wound. You put it on the blade that made the wound — or, if the blade was gone, on a stick dipped in the patient's blood — and the patient, who might be miles away, healed. In 1608 a professor at the University of Marburg published a treatise arguing that this worked, and that it worked for reasons that were entirely natural. He spent the rest of his life defending that second claim against a Jesuit who insisted the cause was the Devil.
Born Into the Faculty
Rudolph Göckel — Latinised, as scholars then were, to Goclenius — was born at Wittenberg in 1572, the eldest son of a man with the same name who held the chair of physics, logic, mathematics and ethics at Marburg and is remembered today as the philosopher who put the word *psychologia* into circulation. The son grew up inside the German academic system and entered it early, matriculating at Marburg at fifteen and taking part in public disputations against his own father, a spectacle that must have been either an education or an ordeal, and was probably both.
He took his master's degree in 1591 and his medical degree in 1601. Between those dates he served as rector of the new gymnasium at Büdingen and as personal physician to Count Wolfgang Ernst I. He then returned to Marburg and collected chairs at a rate that would be unimaginable now: physics and astronomy in 1608, medicine in 1611, mathematics in 1612. The seventeenth-century professor was expected to be a generalist, and Goclenius was a thorough one.
The Magnetic Cure of Wounds
The *Tractatus de magnetica vulnerum curatione*, printed at Marburg in 1608, is the book that made and unmade his reputation. The practice it defended — variously the weapon salve, the *unguentum armarium*, the powder of sympathy — was Paracelsian in origin and widespread in practice. Goclenius, a Calvinist physician, set out to give it a mechanism.
His explanation was that a magnetic sympathy operated between the weapon and the wound, and that this influence travelled by way of the stars. To modern ears this is nonsense wearing a lab coat. In 1608 it was something more interesting. Magnetism was the most exciting unexplained force in natural philosophy — William Gilbert's *De Magnete* had appeared in 1600 — and action at a distance was precisely the phenomenon that respectable investigators were struggling to account for. Goclenius was doing what a natural philosopher of his moment was supposed to do: taking an effect people claimed to observe and reaching for the most powerful non-supernatural explanation available.
The Jesuit
That reaching is what drew fire. Jean Roberti, a Jesuit theologian, attacked the treatise directly — not by denying that the salve worked, but by insisting that its efficacy came from demonic power. His *Anatomia* of Goclenius's treatise appeared at Louvain in 1615, and the exchange ran on for years.
The stakes were not medical. Goclenius, a Protestant, was arguing that a strange effect had a natural cause and belonged to physics. Roberti, a Catholic theologian, was arguing that it belonged to demonology and therefore to the Church. The English physician William Forster took Roberti's side and compared the salve to a witches' ointment. A dispute nominally about ointment was in fact about jurisdiction: who owns the explanation of an anomaly, the natural philosopher or the priest?
What the Treatment Actually Was
It is worth stating the practice plainly, because it explains a good deal. The salve was applied to the instrument. The wound itself was bound and otherwise left alone. In an age whose standard wound therapy involved probing, cautery and the application of assorted compounds by unwashed hands, a regimen whose active intervention was directed at a sword lying on a table was, at minimum, unusually non-destructive. Whether patients noticed the difference is not something the sources establish, and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise.
Why Rudolph Is Called a Genius
The defensible case has nothing to do with medicine. Goclenius was wrong about the weapon salve, comprehensively and in every particular. Nobody has ever been healed by treating the blade.
The quality worth naming is a methodological one: he insisted on a natural explanation for a reported phenomenon when the culturally available alternative was a supernatural one, and he held that position under sustained theological attack from a religious order with real institutional power. Confronted with an anomaly, he did not say *God* and did not say *the Devil*. He said *magnetism*, and *the stars*, and tried to build a mechanism. That instinct — that unexplained effects have causes belonging to physics — is the engine of the scientific revolution, and Goclenius applied it to a case where it produced garbage, because the underlying phenomenon he was explaining did not exist.
That is the counter-case, and it is severe. Genius normally implies getting somewhere; Goclenius got nowhere, defended a superstition with the tools of natural philosophy, and lent his university's authority to a practice that consumed human fat and grave-moss. He was a competent polymathic professor of the kind Germany produced in quantity, and his one distinguishing act was to be spectacularly wrong in a way that happened to be structurally modern. Nobody who has used the word about him, in his lifetime or since, has meant it without qualification, and it should not be used without one now.
Legacy
Goclenius died at Marburg on 3 March 1621; his father, who outlived him, wrote the funeral poem. The weapon salve controversy he started outlasted them both, running through Kenelm Digby's powder of sympathy in England and reaching as far as the seventeenth-century Ottoman Empire, where the debate over sympathetic cures was taken up in Turkish sources. Copies of related recipes survive in remarkable places — one manuscript at Trinity College, Cambridge carries John Dee's signature and the date 1573.
His most durable memorial is entirely accidental and looks down from the Moon: the lunar crater Goclenius, on the edge of the Mare Fecunditatis, carries his name. It is a fitting monument for a professor of physics and astronomy who spent his career arguing that invisible influences travel across empty space — and who picked the one case where they don't.
