The Via Rasella attack in Rome served as the defining wartime operation for medical student and partisan Rosario Bentivegna. Operating under the codename Paolo, he participated in the assault that resulted in the deaths of 32 soldiers from the SS Police Regiment Bozen during the German occupation of Italy in the Second World War.
Political Development and Education
Bentivegna was born in 1922 in Rome and enrolled at the Sapienza University of Rome to study medicine. His anti-fascist convictions took root in 1937, influenced by the introduction of racist legislation and anti-Semitic propaganda in Italy. Although he was a member of the Fascist University Groups as an undergraduate, his ideological trajectory shifted early. In 1939, he co-founded the Trotskyist Group for Marxist Unification alongside Corrado Nourian and Nino Baldini.

By 1941, Bentivegna participated in protests involving several thousand students opposing military draft policies for those in good academic standing. This activity led to his arrest by the Italian secret police. He remained detained until 1943, securing release through the influence of the secret police head's son. Upon his release, he joined the Italian Communist Party, though his earlier Trotskyist associations and his connection to the police leadership limited the trust party officials placed in him.
Post-War Life and Recognition
Following the conclusion of the war, Bentivegna pursued his career as a physician and writer while remaining active in the Italian Communist Party. He married fellow partisan Carla Capponi, and the pair worked to promote the history of the Italian resistance movement. His service during the war earned him the Medal of Military Valour and the Bronze Medal of Merit for National Defence. He continued to reside in Rome, where he passed away in 2012 at the age of 90.
