Early Athletic and Academic Foundation
Born in Monroe, Louisiana, on May 13, 1964, to Ed and Jessie Benton Coleman, he attended Grambling State University. He graduated cum laude in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. Following a period working at Domino's Pizza, he served as a police officer in Arlington, Texas, from 1989 until 2000, continuing as a reserve officer until 2003. His introduction to bodybuilding occurred at Metroflex Gym, managed by Brian Dobson. After training for the 1990 Mr. Texas competition, he secured first place in both heavyweight and overall categories.
Ascension to Mr. Olympia
His initial professional years involved significant travel to compete in global circuits, including the 1991 IFBB World Amateur Championships, where he won the heavyweight division. After placing 16th at the 1992 Mr. Olympia in Helsinki and 15th at the 1994 iteration in Atlanta, he progressively increased his training intensity.
