Early Background
Born in 1829 within the Maria Magdalena parish of Stockholm, Robert Nobel was the eldest son of Immanuel Nobel and Karolina Andrietta Ahlsell. He grew up alongside his brothers Emil Oscar, Ludvig, and Alfred. Throughout his career, he operated across various professional capacities, including investor, economist, and entrepreneur, holding citizenship in both Sweden and the Russian Empire.

In 1873, Nobel initiated his business activities in Baku, Azerbaijan. His focus on the potential of the local resources led him to purchase a stake in an oil refinery three years later, in 1876. This move brought him into direct contact with the expanding energy market, prompting him to involve his brother Ludvig in the growing venture.
Formation of Branobel
The year 1878 marked the formal establishment of Naftabolaget Bröderna Nobel, commonly known as Branobel, when Robert and his brother Alfred joined their interests. The company became a central player in the Russian oil industry, managing large-scale extraction and processing. Robert directed these efforts until 1880, when declining health necessitated his withdrawal from active management.
Retirement and Legacy
Following his departure from the firm in 1880, Ludvig Nobel assumed control of the operations. Robert Nobel traveled through various seaside resorts in southern Europe searching for medical treatment. By 1888, he settled at Getå in Norrköping Municipality. He died in 1896 in Krokeks församling and was interred at Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm.
