Robert Mueller navigated the intersection of American jurisprudence and national security for over four decades, concluding his professional trajectory as the central figure in the 2017-2019 investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. His career spanned service as a combat officer, a federal prosecutor, and the sixth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Military Service in Vietnam
Born in New York City in 1944, Mueller attended Princeton University and New York University before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. He served as a rifle platoon leader in South Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star Medal for valor during an engagement in Operation Scotland II. His military decorations also include the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He concluded his active-duty service as a captain in 1970.

After earning a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973, Mueller transitioned into a career in law and government. He served as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California between 1998 and 2001. In 2001, he briefly held the position of United States Deputy Attorney General before his appointment as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He led the FBI from 2001 until 2013, becoming the only director since J. Edgar Hoover to serve beyond the statutory ten-year limit due to a two-year extension granted by Congress.
Special Counsel and Final Years
In 2017, Mueller accepted the role of special prosecutor to supervise the investigation concerning Russian election interference. Upon the submission of his final report in 2019, the Office of the Special Counsel ceased operations, and Mueller resigned from his post. He had previously served as United States Assistant Attorney General from 1990 to 1993. Mueller died in 2026 in Charlottesville and was interred at Druid Ridge Cemetery.
