Early Development and Spiritual Search
Born in the village of Dhok Gohar Shah on 25 November 1941, Riaz Ahmed Gohar Shahi was a fifth-generation descendant of the Sufi Baba Gohar Ali Shah. By age twenty, he managed a steel business but shifted his focus toward spiritual discovery. After experiencing disillusionment, he returned to civilian life and married, raising three children. In 1975, he commenced a three-year period of self-mortification, spending time in the mountains of Sehwan Sharif and the forest of Laal Bagh.

By the late 1970s, he gained prominence as a Sufi preacher. He founded Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam and RAGS International in 1980, the latter of which later transitioned into the Messiah Foundation International under CEO Younus AlGohar. His teachings drew significant controversy and condemnation from mainstream Islamic scholars, who accused him of claiming prophetic status. Following his public assertions regarding spiritual signs on the Moon and other celestial bodies, the Pakistani government banned his publications and restricted the activities of his followers.
Legal Persecution and Disappearance
Shahi and his supporters were targeted by an antiterrorist court in Sindh, where they faced convictions under blasphemy laws. He subsequently fled to England, where he was sentenced in absentia to approximately 59 years in prison. In 2001, he vanished from public view in London. While the Pakistani Press Foundation and other sources suggest he died in 2001, and subsequent media reports cited 2003, his fate remains officially unconfirmed due to the absence of a verified death certificate or body.
