An accomplished forward, he represented the Netherlands at youth level before transitioning to the Iran national team, for which he scored 17 goals in 44 appearances.
Early Career and Education
Ghoochannejhad spent twelve years within the academy of Eredivisie side Heerenveen. During this period, he played for Leeuwarden clubs LAC Frisia 1883 and Cambuur. His senior debut for Heerenveen occurred in 2006 against AZ Alkmaar. In 2009, he paused his football career to focus on academic studies in jurisprudence and political theory at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, subsequently joining the Go Ahead Eagles.

At Cambuur, he recorded a goal nine seconds into his debut in 2010, matching a record held by Johan Cruyff. He moved to Sint-Truiden in 2011 and transferred to Standard Liège in 2013, where he participated in the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League. His time in England with Charlton Athletic lasted from 2014 until 2016. He returned to Heerenveen in 2016, becoming the club's 2016–17 player of the year after scoring 19 league goals, which included a hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven.
International and Late Career
Internationally, Ghoochannejhad played in the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups and the 2015 AFC Asian Cup for Iran. His later career included a loan spell at Sydney FC, where he scored the winning penalty in the 2019 A-League Grand Final. At PEC Zwolle, he achieved a historic milestone by scoring four goals as a substitute against RKC Waalwijk in 2019, followed by a second hat-trick as a substitute against Willem II in 2021. He retired from professional football by September 2022.
