Early Development and Training
Born on December 11, 1974, in Chula Vista, California, Gutiérrez grew up in a family of Mexican nationals. His early education took place at Montgomery High School in San Diego while he commuted across the border. Trained by his uncle, Rey Misterio, the young athlete adopted his relative's name after performing under monikers such as La Lagartija Verde and Colibrí. By 1991, his technical progression earned him the Most Improved Wrestler award.

In 1992, Mysterio joined Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). During this tenure, he engaged in various mask versus mask and mask versus hair matches throughout Mexico, including bouts in Acapulco, Tampico, and Monterrey. He captured the Mexican National Welterweight Championship in 1992. His participation in the 1994 When Worlds Collide event, a co-promoted showcase with World Championship Wrestling, brought his high-flying style to a broader audience in Los Angeles.
The Global Stage
Mysterio transitioned to major American promotions, significantly impacting the growth of cruiserweight wrestling. After stints in Extreme Championship Wrestling, he signed with World Championship Wrestling in 1996, securing numerous titles including the Cruiserweight Championship five times. Following the 2001 closure of WCW, he performed for various organizations before joining World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002. His tenure in WWE included winning the 2006 Royal Rumble, multiple world championships, and tag team titles. He continues to perform for the Raw brand and serves as the on-screen general manager for AAA.
