Early Development and Vocal Career
Jacobs began his musical training as a boy chorister at the Ghent cathedral. He continued his academic education at Sint-Lievenscollege, Sint-Barbaracollege, and Ghent University, where he studied classical philology. During this period, he sang in Brussels and The Hague. His shift toward becoming a specialist countertenor was encouraged by figures such as Gustav Leonhardt, Alfred Deller, and the Kuijken brothers. As a singer, he recorded substantial volumes of baroque repertoire, featuring works by composers such as Antonio Cesti, Marenzio, Lambert, Guédron, and William Lawes, while performing in notable recordings of Bach, including the St Matthew Passion.

In 1977, Jacobs founded the ensemble Concerto Vocale, marking a shift toward directing ensembles. His work as a conductor focused on sacred and secular pieces from the 16th through the 18th centuries. He became known for his specific approach to recitative and his role as a mentor to singers. His conducting credits include collaborations with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Concerto Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburger Barockorchester, Nederlands Kamerkoor, and RIAS Kammerchor. In 1992, he received an invitation to conduct at the Berlin State Opera, further cementing his stature in the opera world.
Academic and Artistic Leadership
Beyond performing, Jacobs dedicated significant time to teaching and curation. Between 1991 and 2009, he served as the artistic director of opera programs for the Festwochen der Alten Musik in Innsbruck. His pedagogical efforts included teaching Baroque singing styles and interpretation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Throughout his career, he has garnered numerous accolades, including the 2007 Gouden Penning and the 2011 Traetta Prize, reflecting his impact on the performance of early music.
