Rowing Career
Born in 1980 in Carshalton, London, Romero attended Wallington High School for Girls. She began her athletic trajectory at age 17 by joining the Kingston Rowing Club. Her early international results included fifth-place finishes in the quadruple sculls at the 2001 and 2002 World Rowing Championships. In 2004, she reached the Olympic podium in Athens, securing a silver medal in the quadruple sculls alongside teammates Frances Houghton, Alison Mowbray, and Debbie Flood. The following year, the same quartet claimed gold at the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Japan, finishing narrowly ahead of Germany. A persistent back injury prompted her retirement from rowing in 2006.

In April 2006, British Cycling invited Romero to test her capabilities on the track. Her rapid adaptation saw her win the British National Time Trial Championships that September. By December, she debuted internationally, winning silver in the individual pursuit at a Moscow Track World Cup. Her rise continued through 2007, where she won silver at the Track Cycling World Championships in Palma de Mallorca and claimed the national title in the individual pursuit. By 2008, she reached the pinnacle of the sport in Manchester by winning the individual pursuit world title and contributing to a team pursuit victory.
Olympic Success and Later Ventures
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Romero became the first British woman to compete in two different sports at the Summer Games. She defeated Wendy Houvenaghel to win the gold medal in the individual pursuit. Following the decision to remove this event from the Olympic programme, she explored other challenges. She attempted a tandem record from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2009 and later competed in Ironman events. In 2013, she launched a sports performance consultancy called Romero Performance.
