Raul Gardini assumed control of the family firm founded by his father-in-law, Serafino Ferruzzi, in 1980. From this position, he launched a series of aggressive corporate expansions that transformed the entity into a powerhouse within the European industrial landscape, specifically dominating the sugar production sector through the strategic acquisition of the French company Beghin-Say SA.
Agricultural Foundations
Born in Ravenna in 1933, Gardini pursued an education centered on agricultural sciences. He attended the Agricultural Institute of Cesena, where he earned a diploma as an agricultural expert. He continued his studies at the University of Bologna, an institution that later granted him an honorary degree in agriculture in 1987.

Following his success in the sugar industry, Gardini turned his attention toward the chemical sector in 1985. He began accumulating shares in the Montedison group, and by 1987, he controlled 42 per cent of the company. This acquisition solidified the Ferruzzi-Montedison group as the second-largest industrial conglomerate in Italy, trailing only the state-owned Eni. In 1989, the two entities established a joint venture titled Enimont.
Sailing and Competitive Pursuits
Beyond his industrial activities, Gardini invested in professional sailing. In 1992, he organized a sailing team to contest the America's Cup. He appointed Paul Cayard to serve as manager and skipper. Under Cayard's leadership, the vessel Il Moro di Venezia secured a victory in the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup.
Legal Challenges and Final Years
By 1993, Gardini faced scrutiny regarding the Tangentopoli scandal, which followed an unsuccessful attempt to gain full control of the Enimont venture. Later that year, he died by suicide in Milan at the age of 60. Before his death, he published a book titled A modo mio, released in 1991 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore and edited by Cesare Peruzzi.
