Since then, the Bulgarian-born soprano has established a significant international career spanning decades, becoming recognized as a prominent lirico-spinto voice associated with a vast array of Russian, Italian, and twentieth-century operatic roles.
Formative Years and Education
Born in Burgas in 1934, Kabaivanska completed her formal training at the National Academy of Music in Sofia. Her early education included studies in both piano and voice under the guidance of Prokopova and Yosifov. In 1958, she moved to Italy to pursue advanced studies, working in Milan and Vercelli with vocal coaches Zita Fumagalli-Riva and Giulia Tess. This period of instruction proved essential in shaping her distinct theatrical and vocal style.

Kabaivanska secured her Italian breakthrough in Fano as Nedda in Pagliacci. By 1961, she had debuted at La Scala in Milan, appearing as Agnese in Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda alongside Joan Sutherland. Her global presence expanded rapidly throughout the 1960s with performances at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, and the Bolshoi Theatre. Her extensive repertory includes lead roles by Verdi, Massenet, Gounod, Janáček, and Gluck. In 1973, she worked under the direction of Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano in Turin for a production of Verdi's I vespri siciliani.
Pedagogy and the Master Class
Beyond her performance history, Kabaivanska has dedicated significant time to teaching at institutions including the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, the Vecchi-Tonelli Music Institute, and the Accademia d'Arte Lirica. In 2001, she established an annual international master class at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia. This programme, initiated by Georgi Tekev, provides vocal and stage training for young singers. By its 25th anniversary in 2025, the course had supported 270 students, with 111 recipients of the Raina Kabaivanska Fund scholarships continuing their studies in Italy.
Awards and Recognition
Her contributions to music have been recognized with numerous honours, including the Bellini Prize, the Viotti d'Oro, and the Monteverdi Prize. In 2000, she was named a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Within her home country, she received the Order of Stara Planina. More recently, in 2025, she was honored with the Golden Century necklace from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and an award for her philanthropic contributions.
