The production of the 1996 video game adaptation of Casper marked the beginning of a professional tenure in Oslo for Ragnar Tørnquist. This Norwegian designer, producer, and screenwriter has since navigated the evolution of interactive storytelling, moving from large-scale corporate development to the establishment of independent ventures while maintaining a focus on the mechanics of modern adventure games.
Academic Foundation
The educational trajectory began at St Clare's in Oxford, where Tørnquist studied art, history, and English from 1987 to 1989. He continued these studies at the University of Oslo between 1989 and 1990, concentrating on philosophy and English. Following this period in Norway, he enrolled in the Undergraduate Film and Television department at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, attending from 1990 to 1993.

Upon returning to Norway in 1994, Tørnquist joined Funcom. His initial contributions included production, design, writing, and level-editing roles. Over nearly two decades, his output at the studio spanned several titles, including Dragonheart: Fire & Steel in 1996, The Longest Journey in 1999, Anarchy Online in 2001, and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey in 2006. He eventually served as the Game Director and Creative Director for The Secret World, released in 2012.
Independence and Red Thread Games
In November 2012, Tørnquist founded Red Thread Games, an independent studio based in Oslo. The company secured a license from Funcom to continue the development of The Longest Journey intellectual property. The studio has also listed Svalbard as a future project.
Literary and Screen Contributions
Beyond interactive software, Tørnquist has engaged in traditional writing formats. He authored the 2001 novel Anarchy Online – Prophet Without Honour and wrote the short story Rules are Rules. His screenplay credits include the work In the Dark Places.
