Early Development and Estonian Beginnings
Born in 1985 in Viljandi, Estonia, Klavan attended the Viljandi Jakobson School and the Audentes Sports Gymnasium. He began his senior career with Tulevik, where he made his league debut in 2002. Klavan moved to the Netherlands in 2005 to join Heracles Almelo. In 2009, he transitioned to AZ, where he won the league title that same season. Later that year, he became the first Estonian player to appear in the UEFA Champions League group stage. In 2012, he moved to Germany, signing a contract with FC Augsburg. During his four-season tenure in the Bundesliga, he played every minute of the 2014-15 season, helping the club reach a historic fifth-place finish.
Premier League Tenure
Following his transfer to Liverpool in 2016, Klavan made his Premier League debut against Arsenal. His performance in the 2016 derby against Everton earned him man of the match honors. In January 2018, he became the first Estonian to score a goal in the Premier League, securing a victory against Burnley. He was also part of the squad that reached the 2018 UEFA Champions League final.
Final Years and International Legacy
After a stint with Cagliari in 2018, Klavan returned to Estonia in 2021 to play for Paide Linnameeskond, eventually retiring with Tallinna Kalev in 2024. Throughout his career, he represented his country as captain from 2012 onwards. He is the fifth-most capped player in the history of the Estonian national team and holds a record seven Estonian Footballer of the Year awards, earned between 2012 and 2019.
