Rafik Djebbour

Algerian footballer

The career of French-Algerian forward Rafik Djebbour began in 1998, when the Grenoble native joined the youth academy of AJ Auxerre at age fifteen. Over the next two decades, his professional path unfolded primarily across Greek football, where he became a prominent goalscorer for multiple clubs while maintaining citizenship in both France and Algeria.

Early Professional Challenges

After five years in the Auxerre youth system, Djebbour debuted as a senior player in 2003. He soon transferred to R.A.A. Louviéroise in Belgium. His tenure there was marked by professional dissatisfaction following a family crisis, leading to his transfer listing after recording six goals in 21 appearances. By July 2005, he moved to Greece to join Ethnikos Asteras, where he found early success with 11 goals in 21 matches before brief stints at Atromitos and Panionios.

Turbulent Years at AEK Athens

In 2008, Djebbour joined AEK Athens for a €3.2 million fee. His time at the club was defined by high goalscoring productivity alongside frequent disciplinary conflicts with staff and teammates. Following clashes with manager Dušan Bajević in 2009 and Manolo Jimenez in 2011, his relationship with the club deteriorated. He eventually sought a release, leading to intense negotiations and public threats of legal action against the board.

Success at Olympiacos

In January 2011, Olympiacos acquired Djebbour for €2.3 million. He flourished in his new environment, contributing significantly to league and European campaigns. During the 2011-2012 season, he recorded 16 goals across all competitions, including Champions League strikes against Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal. His performance in the Greek Superleague continued to improve, resulting in a contract extension offer following a prolific start to the 2012-2013 season, during which he tallied 12 goals in his first 11 league appearances.
