Following a period at Logroñés, he returned to Santander in 1992, scoring a personal-high eleven goals in a single season. His coaching career began at Racing de Santander in 2001, where he achieved promotion to the top flight. He subsequently managed several clubs, including Lugo, Las Palmas, Real Betis, and Villarreal. In January 2020, he signed with Barcelona, replacing Ernesto Valverde. His tenure ended in August 2020 following an 8–2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. Later, he took charge of Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League, earning Manager of the Month honors in May and June 2025, before resigning in October 2025.
