During the early 1990s, Aven served as a key figure in Russian economic reform. Appointed by President Boris Yeltsin, he was tasked with achieving ruble convertibility and managing foreign debt. During his ministerial tenure, he acted as Russia's representative to the Group of Seven, facilitating high-level trade missions. After leaving the government in 1992, he briefly served as an adviser to Boris Berezovsky at LogoVAZ before entering the banking sector.
Financial and Investment Leadership
In 1994, Aven became a shareholder of Alfa-Bank, serving as its president until 2011. He maintained roles within the Alfa Group Consortium and chaired the board of directors at AlfaStrakhovanie Group. In 2013, he joined the board of the LetterOne Group, an investment business focused on technology, telecoms, and energy. His professional interests also include writing, as evidenced by his 2015 publication Gaidar's Revolution and his 2017 book, The Age of Berezovsky.
Legal Status and Sanctions
Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Aven faced international sanctions and asset freezes. His personal assets, including a 1910 Pyotr Konchalovsky painting, were subject to legal actions. While he contested various measures, including a lawsuit in the European Court of Justice, he also faced ongoing investigations regarding potential sanction evasion and the status of his financial holdings. In April 2024, an EU court annulled sanctions against him due to a lack of evidence.
