Early Education and Professional Preparation
Born in Delhi on 3 February 1929, Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi was one of five children of businessman Mohan Singh Oberoi. His formal education took place at St. Paul's School in Darjeeling. Following his schooling, he pursued further studies in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, where he earned a degree in hotel management. His father encouraged a global outlook, advising him to reside in leading international hotels to gain practical insights into the requirements of luxury service.

Oberoi joined EIH Limited in 1961, eventually assuming the role of chairman in 2002 following his father's death. He served as chief executive officer until 2013. His operational strategy shifted from traditional models toward a heavy emphasis on food quality, which included the recruitment of international chefs and the development of high-end restaurant concepts. In 1967, he founded The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development in Delhi to cultivate talent. He also launched the luxury Vilas hotel brand, which debuted with properties in Agra and Udaipur.
Crisis Management and Industry Recognition
The 2008 Mumbai attacks directly impacted the Oberoi group when the Trident Hotel in Mumbai was targeted by terrorists. Oberoi directed the rapid restoration and reopening of the property. Throughout his career, he held various professional roles, including a directorship at Jet Airways starting in 2004. His industry contributions were widely acknowledged, notably through the Padma Vibhushan award in 2008. Additional honors included being named Corporate Hotelier of the World by Hotels magazine in 2010 and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the All India Management Association in 2013.
Succession and Legal Developments
Following his death on 14 November 2023 at the age of 94, his son Vikram Singh Oberoi took over leadership of the Oberoi Group. A subsequent legal conflict emerged regarding his estate and the interpretation of two conflicting wills. This dispute involved his daughter Anastasia, his older children, and his nephew Arjun. In September 2024, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order that restricted the transfer of company shares and secured the family residence for Anastasia and her mother, Mirjana Jojic Oberoi.
