Prem Watsa

Canadian business magnate, investor, and philanthropist

Fairfax Financial Holdings reached annual revenues of $8 billion by 2012 under the leadership of V. Prem Watsa, who transformed a struggling Canadian trucking insurance company into a major financial entity. Since acquiring Markel Financial in 1985 and rebranding the firm, Watsa has maintained a significant presence in global finance while keeping a relatively low public profile.

Educational Background

Born in 1950 in Hyderabad, India, Watsa attended Hyderabad Public School before pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Upon relocating to Canada, he enrolled at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, where he completed his MBA. To fund his studies, he sold air conditioners and furnaces, arriving in the country with only US$8.

Founding Fairfax Financial

Watsa began his career at Confederation Life insurance company. In 1984, he partnered with Tony Hamblin to establish Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel. A year later, he gained control of Markel Financial, a firm near bankruptcy that became the foundation for his future enterprise. By 2012, the renamed Fairfax Financial Holdings had attained $8 billion in yearly revenue. Watsa, often compared to Warren Buffett, began holding regular investor conference calls in 2001 to discuss the firm's operations.

Corporate Engagements

In January 2012, Watsa joined the board of directors at Research In Motion, the manufacturer of BlackBerry devices, during a major corporate restructuring. Although he resigned from the board in August 2013, he remained a significant investor. In September 2013, BlackBerry announced a letter of intent to be acquired by Fairfax Financial Holdings in a deal valued at $4.7 billion. Watsa also gained attention in 2017 for his warnings regarding a potential real estate bubble in Toronto, suggesting that local banks might struggle if property values declined by 50%.

Philanthropy and Academic Service

Watsa maintains several institutional roles, including serving on the Board of Trustees for The Hospital for Sick Children and the Board of Directors for the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation. He chaired the Investment Committee of St. Paul's Anglican Church and contributed to the Advisory Board of the Richard Ivey School of Business. In 2009, he became the ninth chancellor of the University of Waterloo, and in 2017, he was elected as the first chancellor of Huron University College.
