Poppy Clare Veronica Gustafsson managed the 2021 initial public offering for the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, an entity she helped establish eight years earlier. Early Education and Professional Training
Born in 1982 in Huntingdon, Gustafsson attended Hinchingbrooke School. She pursued higher education at the University of Sheffield, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 2003. Following her academic studies, she entered the accountancy profession, gaining her qualification as a chartered accountant in 2006 after completing training at Deloitte.

Before her tenure at Darktrace, Gustafsson worked at Amadeus Capital Partners and subsequently held a position as a corporate controller at Autonomy until its acquisition by HP. In 2013, she co-founded Darktrace, serving initially as the chief financial officer. By 2016, she assumed the role of co-chief executive, eventually becoming the sole CEO in 2020. She departed the organization in 2024 shortly before the company finalized its sale to Thoma Bravo.
Political Appointment and Public Service
In October 2024, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer appointed Gustafsson as Minister of State for Investment. To facilitate her participation in the House of Lords, she was created a life peer as Baroness Gustafsson of Chesterton in the City of Cambridge on 15 November 2024. Her government service concluded on 5 September 2025 when she resigned from her ministerial post during a cabinet reshuffle.
Professional Recognition
Gustafsson received the appointment of Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2019 for her contributions to the cybersecurity industry. In 2022, the University of Sheffield awarded her an honorary doctorate. Her accolades continued in 2025 with a promotion to Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours.
