Pola Raksa

A photograph in the Dookoła Świata magazine initially launched the career of Apolonia Raksa after a reporter spotted her in a cafeteria. Since that discovery, she developed a trajectory spanning the National Film School in Łódź and the stages of Warsaw, establishing her standing within the Polish cinematic and theatrical traditions of the mid-twentieth century.

Formative Years and Education

Born in 1941 in Lida, Raksa relocated to Wrocław with her parents in 1943. Her early academic background included studies at the University of Wrocław, where she enrolled in the Department of Philology to study the Polish language. During this period, she engaged with the student theater group Kalambur. She eventually transitioned to the National Film School in Łódź, completing her formal education there in 1964.

Screen and Stage Career

Raksa made her motion picture debut in 1960 as Wanda in the film Szatan z siódmej klasy. Her filmography includes roles in Panienka z okienka and Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie in 1964, followed by appearances in Popioły in 1965 and Bicz boży in 1966. On television, she reached significant recognition as the nurse Marusia in the series Czterej pancerni i pies. Her stage work saw her perform at Teatr Powszechny in Łódź between 1964 and 1968, before she joined the company of Teatr Współczesny in Warsaw.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout her career, Raksa received numerous professional distinctions. She was a three-time recipient of the Silver Mask prize between 1967 and 1970 and earned the Silver Badge of Janek Krasicki. Her broader service to the arts was recognized with the Gold Cross of Merit in 1974 and the title of Zasłużony Działacz Kultury in 1979. Additionally, the Soviet Screen journal named her the best actress in 1967.
