Early Development and Polish Beginnings
Born in 1897 in Lipno, she was raised in poverty after her father was sent to Siberia. She studied at Warsaw's Imperial Ballet Academy, performing in Swan Lake and Coppélia before illness forced a shift toward drama. She debuted at The Small Theatre in 1912 and graduated from the Imperial Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1914, having performed in productions like The Wild Duck.

In 1917, she moved to Berlin to appear in a revival of Sumurun. There, she joined the UFA studio, where her collaboration with director Ernst Lubitsch proved pivotal. They produced major works including The Eyes of the Mummy Ma and Madame Dubarry. The success of these films challenged Hollywood's international market dominance and brought her to the attention of American studio executives.
Hollywood Stardom and Later Life
Negri signed with Paramount in 1922, arriving in New York to become the first Continental star imported by Hollywood. She worked extensively throughout the 1920s before returning to Europe in the 1930s for films with Pathé and UFA. After 1940, her film appearances became sporadic, ending with her role in the 1964 film The Moon-Spinners. She later became a naturalized U.S. citizen and lived in San Antonio until her death in 1987.
