Early Development and Education
Born in Gdańsk in 1950, Szulkin pursued formal training in cinema at the National Film School in Łódź. He eventually earned a scientific professorship degree, marking his transition into the pedagogical sphere of the industry.

Szulkin is best recognized for his science fiction narratives that explored societal structures. His 1979 film Golem remains his most significant contribution to the genre. Other notable directing credits include Wojna światów – następne stulecie (1981), O-Bi, O-Ba. Koniec cywilizacji (1984), and Ga, Ga. Chwała bohaterom (1985). He continued his directorial output into the new millennium with Ubu Król in 2003.

The versatility of his craft extended to acting and theater direction. His acting career included roles in Szpital przemienienia (1978), Lawa (1989), and Kiedy rozum śpi (1992). Beyond performance, he was a member of the Polish Film Academy. His professional life also involved a notable legal action in 2013, when he sued the Polski Słownik Biograficzny regarding the inclusion of his father’s ancestry.
Distinctions and Final Years
His cultural contributions earned him the Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. He remained dedicated to his academic role at the National Film School in Łódź until his death in Warsaw in 2018.
