Pinchas Polonsky, born in Moscow in 1958, emerged as a significant figure in the religious modernization of Judaism through his work in the underground Soviet movement and his later scholarly career in Israel. His transition from clandestine Torah education in the Soviet Union to academic research has defined his efforts to synthesize traditional religious values with modern secular insights.
Underground Activism and Education
Polonsky began his academic path at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, where he earned a degree in mathematics and education in 1980. During his time in Moscow, he became a central figure in a secret network dedicated to teaching Torah and disseminating Jewish literature through Samizdat. As a refusenik for seven years, he focused on providing guides for Jewish lifestyle observance. Upon immigrating to Israel in 1987, he helped establish the Israeli branch of the Machanaim organization, where he served as a faculty member and editor until 2012.

His formal education in Israel included studies at the Harry Fischel Institute for Talmudic Research and Beit Morasha in Jerusalem. He received an MA in Talmudic studies from Bar-Ilan University in 1999 and a PhD in the sociology of religion from Belarusian State University in 2002, with a thesis focusing on the teachings of Rav Kook. His research career includes a tenure at Bar-Ilan University from 1991 to 2012 and a position as a senior fellow at Ariel University from 2012 to 2013.
Literary and Philosophical Projects
Polonsky has authored extensive commentaries, most notably 'Bible Dynamics', a series of Torah commentaries rooted in Kabbalistic concepts. He also translated and prepared various prayer books for Russian-speaking Jews, including 'Vrata Molitvy' and 'Gates of Repentance'. Beyond these texts, he initiated the EJWiki project to provide academic information on Jewish topics. His philosophical work advocates for the integration of universal secular values, such as democracy and science, into an orthodox Jewish framework, while his 'Three Stages of the Arrival of the Messiah' concept offers a revised theological model for modern religious Zionism.
