Early Training and COBRA
In 1944, Alechinsky began his studies at the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels, where he focused on illustration, photography, and printing. His early influences included Henri Michaux and Jean Dubuffet. By 1949, he joined the COBRA movement alongside Christian Dotremont, Karel Appel, Constant, Jan Nieuwenhuys, and Asger Jorn, participating in the group's exhibitions during their active years.

Seeking to expand his technical proficiency, he moved to Paris in 1951 to study engraving with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. His interest in Asian aesthetics led him to serve as the Paris correspondent for the Japanese journal Bokubi. In 1955, accompanied by his wife, he traveled to Japan where he created the film Japanese Calligraphy, featuring commentary by Christian Dotremont and music by André Souris.
Global Expansion and Teaching
By 1960, his reach extended to major cities including London, New York City, and Amsterdam. Throughout his career, he collaborated with figures like Walasse Ting and maintained professional links to André Breton. In 1983, he transitioned into academia, serving as a professor of painting at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. His later work includes the large-scale piece Loin d'ici for the 2018/2019 Vienna State Opera Safety Curtain project.
Professional Recognition
Alechinsky has received significant institutional honors for his contributions to the arts. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 2006 and received the Praemium Imperiale in 2018. Additionally, he holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Liège, awarded in 2010. His work is held in numerous international collections, ranging from the Tate in London to the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
