Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, served as the Regent of France from 1715 until 1723, governing during the minority of Louis XV. Born at the Château de Saint-Cloud in 1674, he occupied a central position in the French royal family as a grandson of King Louis XIII, eventually attaining the rank of general through active military service.
Early Life and Education
As the son of Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, and Elisabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate, he was styled as the Duke of Chartres from birth. His upbringing included a rigorous educational program managed by Guillaume Dubois. His instruction encompassed physics and mathematics under Joseph Sauveur, alongside musical studies with Marc-Antoine Charpentier. He also became proficient in playing the viol and the recorder.

Philippe pursued a career in the military, participating in several major engagements during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He experienced his first siege at Mons in 1691 and fought at the Battle of Steenkerque and the Siege of Namur in 1692. He later served at the Battle of Landen and earned recognition for his contributions during the War of the Spanish Succession, specifically during his command in Italy in 1706.
The Regency and Political Role
Following the death of King Louis XIV in 1715, Philippe assumed the role of Regent. His de facto rule, referred to as la Régence, spanned eight years. This period marked his transition from a royal prince to the primary administrator of the French kingdom. He held his position until February 1723 and remained a significant figure in French politics until his death at Versailles in December of that same year.
Artistic Pursuits
Beyond his political and military duties, Philippe was an accomplished artist, composer, and collector. He wrote multiple operas, including Philomèle, Penthée, and Suite d'Armide, ou Jerusalem delivree. As a dedicated art collector, he assembled the Orleans Collection, which became a notable assembly of works. His cultural contributions reflected his broader interests in music, etching, and painting.
