Philippe Coutinho transitioned from the youth ranks of Vasco da Gama to professional football in Europe, earning recognition for his passing, dribbling, and long-range shooting ability. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he developed his early skills in futsal before rising through domestic league tiers and securing a transfer to Inter Milan at age sixteen.
Early Career and Move to Europe
Raised in the Rocha district of Rio de Janeiro, Coutinho started playing football after observing his brothers. His talent led him to the Vasco da Gama academy. In July 2008, Inter Milan signed the teenager for four million euros. Because international regulations prevented his immediate transfer, he remained at Vasco for two years, contributing to their 2009 Série B title win before relocating to Italy in 2010.
Development in Italy and Spain
Upon arriving at Inter Milan, Coutinho debuted in the 2010 UEFA Super Cup. He scored his first goal for the club against Fiorentina in May 2011. Seeking consistent playing time during the 2011–2012 season, he joined Espanyol on loan in January 2012. He made sixteen appearances for the Spanish club, scoring five times, before returning to Italy.
