September 16, 1977, marked the birth of Philip Ng in Hong Kong, an individual whose career spans the dual worlds of professional martial arts and international cinema. After relocating to the United States during childhood, he cultivated a technical foundation in multiple combat disciplines that eventually facilitated his transition into the competitive film industry in Hong Kong.
Martial Arts Training
Ng began his formal martial arts training with Hung Gar, instructed by his uncle, and Choy Lay Fut, taught by his father. At age 13, he expanded his expertise to include Wing Chun Gung Fu under the guidance of his uncle, Alan Ang, and Taekwondo under Master Woon S. Shim. During his youth in Chicago, Illinois, he frequently traveled to Hong Kong to train directly with Wong Shun-leung. Before Wong's death in 1997, the Sifu encouraged Ng to begin instructing students in the United States to serve as training partners.

During his studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ng founded the Illini Wing Chun Association. He presided over the organization as both club president and head instructor for five years. His time at the university resulted in a bachelor's degree in graphic design and a master's degree in education. Beyond his core studies, he engaged in sparring and training with various martial stylists, which provided him with applied skills in Muay Thai, Western Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Eskrima.
Film and Choreography Career
After teaching school for one year, Ng moved to Hong Kong in 2002 to pursue work in television and film. He initially collaborated with action director Chin Ka Lok, serving as an assistant martial arts choreographer. Over the following years, he worked as a stunt performer and featured actor to establish his presence in the industry. He achieved a significant professional milestone in 2014 by starring in the martial arts film Once Upon a Time in Shanghai. In 2016, he portrayed Bruce Lee in the biographical film Birth of the Dragon, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 13, 2016.
