Phil Fish

Quebecois indie video game designer

The 2012 release of the platformer Fez arrived after a five-year development cycle, vaulting its creator, Phil Fish, into a level of public visibility rare for software developers. Born Philippe Poisson in Montreal in 1984, Fish established himself as a prominent indie game designer, despite a professional trajectory marked by periods of intense public conflict and industry withdrawal.

Early Career and Education

Raised in Quebec, Fish was exposed to gaming at an early age; his father translated The Legend of Zelda into French to facilitate their shared play. He pursued formal training at the Montreal National Animation and Design Centre, graduating in 2004 from the Design and Digital Art for Video Games program. His initial professional experiences included stints at Ubisoft and Artificial Mind and Movement. During this time, he worked as a level designer on titles such as Open Season and The Golden Compass, though he eventually grew dissatisfied with the traditional development environment.

The Rise of Polytron

Fish co-founded the collective Kokoromi to explore experimental gameplay and organized regional events like GAMMA 01 and GAMMA 256. In 2008, he left his position at Artificial Mind and Movement to focus full-time on his independent venture, Polytron Corporation. The company’s flagship project, Fez, originated from a collaboration with Shawn McGrath focused on shifting between 2D and 3D perspectives. Following the dissolution of that partnership, Fish continued the project by incorporating voxel mechanics and hiring programmer Renaud Bédard. The project faced significant financial strain until a partnership with developer-producer Trapdoor secured its completion.

Public Perception and Industry Impact

The release of Fez was documented in the 2012 film Indie Game: The Movie, which highlighted the psychological and legal pressures surrounding the game's final stages. Fish became a polarizing figure, known for his outspoken criticisms of modern games and industry practices. After being doxxed following online disputes, he announced his departure from the field on multiple occasions. Despite these exits, he returned to contribute to projects like the 2015 game Panoramical and the 2016 release SuperHyperCube, and he later worked on the hardware project Analogue Super Nt.
