Philip David Charles Collins arrived on 30 January 1951 at Putney Hospital in London, marking the start of a career that spanned acting, composition, and percussion. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, he transitioned from childhood stage roles to become a defining figure in rock and pop through his tenure with Genesis and a prolific solo output that achieved global commercial success.
Early Career and Acting
Before his rise in music, Collins pursued acting, enrolling at the Barbara Speake Stage School in 1965 after attending Chiswick School. He gained prominence as the Artful Dodger in the West End production of Oliver! and appeared as an extra in the 1964 film A Hard Day's Night. Following these roles, he shifted focus entirely to his musical development, playing with groups such as Flaming Youth before joining Genesis in 1970.

As the drummer for Genesis, Collins provided the rhythmic foundation for the group's progressive rock era. Following the 1975 departure of frontman Peter Gabriel, he assumed lead vocal responsibilities, steering the band toward a more mainstream pop-rock sound. Throughout this period, he concurrently explored jazz fusion as a drummer for the band Brand X and later founded The Phil Collins Big Band in 1996.
Solo Success and Technical Innovation
Collins launched his solo career in 1981, characterized by a distinct production style, notably the gated reverb drum sound that influenced 1980s music. His work as a singer-songwriter resulted in multiple international chart-toppers, including 'In the Air Tonight', 'Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)', 'A Groovy Kind of Love', and 'Another Day in Paradise'. His contribution to film soundtracks also earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2000 for 'You'll Be in My Heart'.
Honors and Recognition
His body of work has earned numerous accolades, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Johnny Mercer Award in 2010, and recognition as a Disney Legend in 2002. He holds the MusiCares Person of the Year award from 1997 and received the Echo Pop Award for Best International Rock/Pop Male Artist in 1992. His musical efforts are further highlighted by his 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis.
