Early Career and Leicester City
Born in 1949 in Leicester, Shilton began training with his local club, Leicester City, in 1963 while attending the King Richard III Boys School. At 16, he made his first-team debut against Everton in May 1966. His performances prompted the club to transfer established goalkeeper Gordon Banks to Stoke City.

In November 1974, Shilton joined Stoke City for a world-record fee of £325,000 for a goalkeeper. He moved to Nottingham Forest in September 1977 for £250,000. Under manager Brian Clough, he helped the club win the First Division championship and two consecutive European Cups in 1979 and 1980. During this period, he was voted PFA Players' Player of the Year. However, personal challenges and a decline in the club's trophy-winning form led to his departure from Forest in 1982.
International Tenure and Later Years
He shares the record of 10 clean sheets in World Cup finals matches. His career continued at Southampton, where he joined in 1982, and later at Derby County starting in 1987. By 1991, at age 42, he began considering a transition into coaching. His services to the sport were recognized with an appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991.
