Early Development and Amateur Success
Sagan began cycling at age nine with the local club Cyklistický spolok Žilina. His early approach often involved unconventional methods, including riding in tennis shoes and t-shirts. Despite facing equipment challenges, such as borrowing a bicycle from his sister for a Slovak Cup race, he achieved early success. His transition to international recognition accelerated when he won the junior cross-country event at the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in Val di Sole, alongside a second-place finish at the junior UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Treviso.

His professional path began in 2009 with the Slovak team Dukla Trenčín–Merida. Following a difficult testing period with Quick-Step, he secured a contract with Liquigas–Doimo for the 2010 season. Management at the team quickly identified his physical potential, earning him the nickname Terminator. At age 19, his debut at the 2010 Tour Down Under included racing through a crash that left him with 17 stitches. He soon demonstrated his range by winning stages in Paris–Nice and the Tour of California, establishing himself as a significant talent in ProTour events.

Throughout his career, Sagan attained several distinct records in the sport. He achieved seven points classifications in the Tour de France and won major cycling monuments, specifically the Tour of Flanders in 2016 and Paris–Roubaix in 2018.
