Early Life and Education
Finch was born to Alicia Gladys Fisher and George Ingle Finch, an Australian chemist. Following his parents' divorce, he spent his youth in diverse settings, including a period in a Buddhist monastery in India. In 1926, he moved to Australia to reside with his great-uncle, eventually attending North Sydney Technical High School until 1929.

Beginning his professional life as a copy boy for the Sydney Sun, Finch soon transitioned to performance. He appeared in various stage productions, worked in vaudeville, and gained significant traction in radio drama. Throughout the late 1930s and 1940s, he became a prominent voice on Australian radio, winning Macquarie Awards for best actor in 1946 and 1947. His early screen appearances included the short film The Magic Shoes and feature roles in Dad and Dave Come to Town and Mr. Chedworth Steps Out.
Military Service
Enlisting in the Australian Army in 1941, Finch served as an anti-aircraft gunner in the Middle East and during the Bombing of Darwin. His military tenure included acting in propaganda shorts and touring hospitals with theatrical troupes. He was discharged in 1945 holding the rank of sergeant.
Transition to British Cinema
After a chance encounter with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh during their 1948 Australian tour, Finch relocated to London. He integrated into the British film industry, eventually securing wide critical success. His career culminated in the 1976 film Network, where he portrayed Howard Beale. This performance secured him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1977, awarded after his death at age 61. He is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
