Formative Years and Military Service
Born in Norristown in 1935, Boyle attended West Philadelphia Catholic High School. He later entered the De La Salle Brothers teaching order, completing a Bachelor of Arts at La Salle University in 1957. After leaving the order, he joined the United States Navy, graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1959. His military career ended prematurely following a nervous breakdown.

Boyle moved to New York City to study under Uta Hagen at HB Studio while working in service roles. He gained early stage experience with the Wayside Theatre and The Second City. His breakthrough occurred with the 1970 film Joe, where he played a factory worker. Following this, he appeared in films including The Candidate, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, and the 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein.
Television and Legacy
Boyle is noted for his role as Frank Barone on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, running from 1996 to 2005. He received multiple award nominations for this character. In 1996, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Clyde Bruckman in The X-Files. Boyle died in New York City in 2006.
