Formative Years and International Training
Initial training occurred within the Ghent workshop of his grandfather. Verschaffelt subsequently traveled to Brussels and Paris to refine his skills. Between 1737 and 1751, he operated in Rome, a period that culminated in the prestigious commission for the archangel Michael sculpture in 1748. Although the work was completed during this residency, the installation at the Castel Sant'Angelo did not occur until 1753.

Following a brief period in London in 1752, he relocated to Mannheim to serve as court sculptor to Charles Theodore, Elector of the Palatinate. His architectural portfolio in Mannheim includes the high altar of the Jesuitenkirche, the arsenal, and the Bretzenheim Palace. Additionally, he designed the Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt located in Oggersheim, which is now part of the modern city of Ludwigshafen.
Landscape Design and Civic Legacy
His expertise extended into the planning of large-scale outdoor environments, most notably at the palace garden of Schwetzingen. He developed the landscape and statuary for this site, executing the deer and the group of rivers that remain the park's primary visual elements. His contributions to the region were recognized with the Supreme Order of Christ.
