Born in 1941 in Madras, British India, Randolph Peter Best relocated to Liverpool with his family in 1945. He attended the Liverpool Collegiate School and eventually formed his own group, the Black Jacks. His mother, Mona Best, converted the cellar of their home into the Casbah Coffee Club, providing a performance space for local musicians. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison frequented the club, establishing early professional ties with the Best family.

In 1960, Paul McCartney recruited Best as the drummer for a series of bookings in Hamburg, Germany. Best accepted the offer, setting aside potential teacher-training college studies to join the band. During these demanding international club residencies, the group established a specific visual style and performed long sets. Best consistently declined the recreational drugs, such as Preludin, which other members of the group utilized to maintain their performance stamina during the grueling Hamburg schedule.
Departure and Later Career
On 16 August 1962, Brian Epstein informed Best that he was no longer required by the group, acting on the requests of Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison following the band's initial recording session. Best pursued a career as a civil servant for two decades before returning to professional music. He formed the Pete Best Band, which remained active from 1988 until 2025. In 1995, he received a monetary settlement following the release of the Anthology 1 compilation, which featured his drumming on tracks including the original Decca auditions.
