Pedro Passos Coelho

Pedro Passos Coelho held the office of Prime Minister of Portugal between 2011 and 2015, a period defined by the implementation of a European troika bailout. His tenure involved managing the fiscal consequences of that intervention, which required the state to navigate significant economic austerity measures while he led the Social Democratic Party.

Early Development and Education

Born in 1964 in the parish of Sé Nova in Coimbra, he spent his formative childhood years in Angola. After the 1974 Carnation Revolution, his family relocated to Vila Real in northern Portugal. He initially pursued academic interests in mathematics and attempted to qualify for medical school, eventually attending the University of Lisbon. He completed a degree in economics at Lusíada University in 2001 at the age of 37.

Rise within the Social Democratic Party

His engagement with the Social Democratic Party began in his youth. He served as a member of the National Council of the party's youth branch between 1980 and 1982. By 1991, he held the presidency of that branch. His parliamentary career commenced in 1991, serving as a Lisbon deputy to the Assembly of the Republic until 1999. During this period, he also contributed to the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO and served as vice chairman of the PSD parliamentary group.

Professional and Governmental Roles

Between political mandates, he engaged in various professional roles, including working as a consultant for Tecnoformas and LDN Consultants. In 2010, he ascended to the presidency of the Social Democratic Party, a role he maintained until 2018. During his premiership, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
