Engineering and Astronaut Training
Graduating from the Technical University of Madrid in 1986, Duque began his career in Madrid with GMV Innovating Solutions. By 1992, he joined the European Space Agency, where he undertook rigorous astronaut training in both Russia and the United States. His technical background as an aeronautical engineer provided the foundation for his selection as a mission specialist.

He later transitioned into executive management, serving as the managing director and then executive president of Deimos Imaging between 2006 and 2011. During his tenure, the company launched the Deimos 1 earth observation satellite to assist with agriculture and forestry monitoring.
Public Service and Ministerial Leadership
In 2018, Pedro Sánchez appointed Duque as the Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities. He held this cabinet position until 2021, while also serving as a Member of the Congress of Deputies for Alicante across two separate periods in 2019 and 2020. During his ministry, he committed to increasing Spain’s financial contribution to the European Space Agency by €701 million.
Professional Affiliations and Expertise
Since leaving his ministerial post, Duque has continued his involvement in the aerospace sector. In 2022, he joined the strategic committee of Destinus as an advisor to assist with the development of hypersonic liquid hydrogen aircraft. In December 2023, he assumed the role of chair at Hispasat. He maintains active membership in the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain and the International Academy of Astronautics.
